Cadet or Trainee Prerequisites:

1. 15-22 years old.

2. Accidental medical insurance.

3. Drug free.

 

Overview

This program is an immersion into the nautical tall ship world where each student takes part in the total functions of the vessel while studying the nomenclature, theory, and practice of nautical science and leadership.  Both practical and written assignments will be used. Students will also serve on public cruises when in ports of call mainly on the weekends.

  • Cruise Route and Routine

    Cruises originate and return from Navy Pier, Chicago, IL On longer cruises, students may join near mid cruise. Each cruise will have a variety of types of cruising including 24 hours at sea, port of call, lake crossings, anchoring, participation in festivals, and the like.  Everyone is assigned to one of three watches which must be manned to run the vessel, During the off watch, classes will be held. The third watch sleep and personal time.

    Assignment of Watches:

     1.  Take the watch and specific duties assigned

           Helm, Bow watch, navigation, boat check, galley

    Class Topics: Main classes will be in the afternoon

    1. Orientation and Safety Drills

    2. Nomenclature

    3. Sailing terms and theory

    4. Marlinspike Seamanship

    5. Leadership and Crew dynamics

    6. Mechanical propulsion and ship systems (electrical, water, waste)

    7. Coastal navigation and dead reckoning

    8. Electronic Navigation: GPS, Sonar, Radar, VHS, SSB

    9. Weather

    10.  Celestial Navigation Noon site

     

    Typical Watch Periods:

    0000-2000, 0200-0500, 0500-0800, 0800-1200, 1200-1800, 1800-2200, 2200-2400.
