CURRICULUM

Introduction to Maritime Heritage Short Topics

Typically, three of the following short topics are presented during the 1-1/2 hour cruise. Specific topics selected for any given cruise are  dependent upon the knowledge of the particular crew on board the cruise.

1. Nomenclature. Students are instructed and review the names of the  sails, masts and spars, parts of the boat and directions.

2. Physics of Sailing. This topic introduces the concepts of wind pressure and the effects on the air foil of the sail and how it drives the ship.  Basic sailing terms are also reviewed.

3. Life of the sailor. Over a 100 years ago, sailing ships were the tractor trailer trucks of the day. Sailors were the basic labor that performed the loading, repair, maintenance as well as sailing the ship.  Their  work  recreation and artistry’s are shared.

4. Maritime Heritage. The early immigrants and settlers came over  on sailing ships.  Crossing the Atlantic presented considerable risks to the not to sure prospects of a new land. Only folks who had a risk taking, visionary, problem solving attitude were willing to try. Often they were religious by will and purpose or by the trials of the sea. Are these not the seeds of what helped make America great?

5. Marlinspike. The extension of the sailor’s are are the ropes and lines  he uses to work the ship and sails.  Marlinespike is the art and knowledge of working with knots, splices, hitches, bends, etc.  WINDY has over 2 miles of line and to be a useful sailor, he/she must know them all

6. Special Topics. If a class or group has a special area of interest, it should be made known.  Although not guaranteed, we will inquire among the crew if such a topic could be accommodated.  Call to discuss how we can meet some of your educational interests
